Jack Black Turbocharge Mega Ale

Turbocharge It!

November 30, 2018 IN Beers

We’ve made a BIG beer. A no holds barred, full tilt, throw everything at it kind of beer. A beer with a big grain bill, and a mountain of hops. It’s got attitude. It’s got flavour. It hits you with a mixed bag of ripe apricots, passion fruit and raspberries, Kapow! Our goal was to go BIG – we’ve gone MEGA.

Jack Black Turbocharge Mega Ale

We’re stoked to bring you our latest R&D beer – our Turbocharge Mega Ale. With 60 IBUs and 8% ABV, this beer commands respect. It’s dry-hopped for maximum hoppiness. It’s kickass – a beer you wanna get involved with.

And it’s GOOD. So good it won ‘Best in Show’ at Cape Town Festival of Beer 2018. It won ‘Best Hoppy Beer’ too. BOOM!

Wolves of Winter Stout

August 23, 2018 IN Beers, Brewery

With bucket loads of talent and twice the passion, our brewers have collaborated to brew our once-off Wolves of Winter Stout. Inspired by the drop in temperature, fire-side weekends, and an itch to try something new, our team came together and developed this unique recipe ’round the table of an informal brewer’s lunch in our Taproom. Knowing we had a small window in our brewing schedule, a quick scramble for raw materials ensued, and the brewing process began the very next day.

“We wanted to do something completely different while staying true to what we do best. This beer is the culmination of the expertise, perfectionism and passion of our brewing family.”

Our primary focus was the malt. We wanted to achieve a deep dark colour without adding any roasted bitterness, so, along with a few other malts, we chose to brew with Carafa Special – a malt that doesn’t contain a husk and provides a deep rich colour without imparting any strong roasted characters. We’ve kept the hop profile simple, with subtle bitterness and a piney, resinous aroma. And because we wanted this stout to be a little different, we fermented it with lager yeast.

The result is a truly delicious, complex beer that goes down well and leaves room for another. And another.

This R&D release will be available at our Taproom only – while stocks last. If any kegs do sneak out of the brewery, we’ll let you know where they end up!

Colour: Dark
Nose: Upfront coffee and chocolate aromas with nuances of roasted marshmallows.
Taste: Refreshing medium-bodied stout; unique bitterness that gently lingers, then disappears inviting the next sip… Dark chocolate and coffee flavours follow through on the palate for a subtle but delicious finish.

April 13, 2018 IN Beers, Brewery, Limited Release

Small batches. Limited Quantities. Rad ingredients. This pretty much sums up our limited edition beers. We love to stretch our wings, push our brewers, and put our skills to the test. And if the outcome is awesome, we bottle it.

Cue our one-of-a-kind Fresh Hop IPA.

Man, we love this beer. Making it is an adventure. We have the chance to trek up to George during the tiny window period of the fresh hop harvest and hand-pick the precious whole cone hops that shape the character of the brew.

Once again, we were lucky to get our hands on the African Queen varietal, which continues to inspire our label design. Cooler boxes brimming, we rushed back home to hop the sh*t out of the first brew – adding handfuls of hops to the lautertun and then generously throughout the brewing process, maxing out on the fresh cones. Whole Cone Citra was added in the whirlpool for a little extra kick, and we rolled out the hop gun for dry-hopping after fermentation.

And so, each bottle is packed full of seriously fresh flavours without the overpowering bitterness usually associated with heavily hopped IPAs. Crack one open and you’ll experience an explosion of grassy and citrus aromas with fresh berries and grapefruit on the palate, balanced by light earthy wood notes.

This beer is best enjoyed FRESH! Savour it if you’re celebrating a special occasion, or hell, crack one open just because this limited edition brew is reason enough to celebrate.

Join us at the brewery for our launch event on Friday April 20th, or grab a 4 pack or a pint from your nearest store or watering hole. When we say it’s ‘Limited Edition’, we mean it – so mark your calendars! Beers will be available for purchase from April 26th at the below selected outlets – while stocks last!

Of course we’ll be pouring it in the Taproom so if you’re in our area, pull in for a pint – straight from the source.

The First Rule of Batrun….

February 23, 2018 IN Adventure, Beers, Events, Sports

…is never to talk about Batrun…

But, this race was so epic we just can’t help ourselves!

The Batrun is held around full moon every year in Feb or March. Grit, determination and extreme enthusiasm for the mountain and the outdoors are obvious pre-requisites.

The route is 30km, with a gain of 2250m (which is insane!), up and down the three Table Mountain National Park summits – Devil’s Peak, Maclear’s Beacon and Lion’s Head – all run at night with ‘bat vision’.

Sure there are some pro athletes in the group, but this is a community event run by those lucky enough to get their hands on one of the limited number of tickets, creating a super supportive, non-competitive vibe, with a good time had by all – including the crew.

Last weekend, from sunset to sunrise, we followed the runners up and down the three peaks cheered them on and handed out medals they couldn’t have worked harder to earn – ice cold Jack Black Beers.

“In running, the road is pop music, the trail is rock & roll, and the Batrun is heavy metal. It’s the raddest event on the calendar, and attracts the coolest, craziest runners and supporters alike.” – Pete Calitz.

Here’s a glimpse into the epic-ness that is the Batrun. A serious congratulations to everyone who gave this a go.

For more info on the race, check out the Batrun website.

A huge thanks goes out to the team below without whom this video would not have been possible. Thanks for giving us your Saturday night…and more!
