Meet the man behind our Taproom reboot, Phil De Villiers.
With multiple accolades and many years’ experience, Phil joins our Team as Head Chef. His passion for creating great, honest food positions him perfectly within the Jack Black family, and our vision for the best craft beers paired with the ultimate craft burgers.
Phil’s love for cooking began as a child, glued to the tv watching cooking shows over cartoons. Life had him moving in the direction of a chartered accountant, but after a few years of studying, he couldn’t ignore that feeling inside, calling him towards his true passion. Phil enrolled in Prue Leith College of Food and Wine and graduated in 2006.
After spending many years working in fine dining, he realised that he wanted to strip it all back to just pure cooking. Phil and his wife packed up their life in Joburg and moved down to Cape Town. Achieving success with opening Primal Eatery and winning best Steakhouse in 2017, Phil moved to open the restaurant at the prestigious Norval Foundation where success followed.
Phil’s honest ethos towards making and serving good food has revolved around flavour and provenance – ethically sourced ingredients, with flavour leading the way. He now joins Jack Black’s Taproom and is planning to hone his many years of experience to give the customers the best craft beer and burger experience he can, alongside his wife Jannicke and our awesome Taproom team.
